Not long after I started photographing vaginas for vagina
vérité®, it was pointed out that it is not the vagina I am shooting,
it's the vulva. It's true. The vagina is the canal. The vulva is what's on the outside. Our vulvas are the faces of our vaginas. They are the threshold into the vagina conversation I want to have.
It is important to know what's what [check out all the parts of the vulva—did you know there were so many?] - but in a conversation about personal experience, getting literary is a given.
vagina vérité™ is an exploration into (for many of us) unfamiliar territory. By publishing it, I hope to provide a collective mirror, to start conversation about what we share, about what is unique about us. vagina vérité™, the book, will be a book of vulva photographs. What I propose, with the book, with this web site, is an inquiry into our relationships with our vaginas, our vulvas, our ovaries, uteri, sexuality, and how that relates to our sense of self...and, like all relationships, each is individual, complex and involves more than can easily be defined, diagrammed [see vulva diagram], or described by its name.
Another thought:
language is not a static thing. It evolves along with us. Meanings that,
well...lose their meaning, are demoted to 2nd-, 3rd-, 4th-level definition—logged in our dictionaries, but rarely used. An earlier definition of vagina was a sheath as in something a sword goes into. That doesn't begin to describe a vagina for me.—Alexandra
