How did you
first learn about sex? |
|
I first learned
about real sex in the 6th grade. I was at St. John Berchman's in Detroit.
They split the girls from the boys and took us all into a classroom.
It was an open forum and we had the ability to ask any question that
we had. As long as we were serious. No laughing , no taunting, no outbursts.
The session was moderated by a Priest and a lay female teacher lay person,
who kept the conversation on track. After a few hesitant moments we opened
up, every question was answered. I learned a tremendous amount in a respectfull
atmosphere. Myths were dispelled and knowledge was gained. This session
was so successfull that they started this as an annual part of sex ed.
The second most impressionable lesson I had was in high school. Father
Swann (N.D. High School) taught us about the use of a condom in HS choir.
We joked and laughed about what he was trying to teach us, But it actually
got through to me. I never had sex without the use of a condom. I guess
his tirade worked.

Do you feel
the information you were given was adequate? |
|
Yes it was
tremendously adequate.
|
|
| |
What do you
think of the quality of sex education today? |
|
I dont believe
it is even being addressed today. My sister in law is a k - 8 teacher
and she tells stories of male students servicing male students in the
boys bathrooms. It is apalling.
|
|
| |
Do you feel
that the media's obsession with sex leaves nothing left for parents
to teach their kids? |
|
Yes and no.
Media sex is mostly portrayed in an inappropriate way. Sex in the City,
OZ, the L word and Buffy the Vamire Slayer are horrid venues for teaching
sex. Parents need to monitor thier children against media displays of
sex. They should speak with their children about sex, because even when
you think they arent listening , they are.
|
|
| |
Do you think
that sexuality education should be treated differently for girls than
it is for boys? |
|
Yes. Women
need to know more than guys...they're at greater risk of being taken
advantage of because--sadly--even in the new millennium, young girls
regularly don't get enough of the facts to make smart choices.
|
|
| |
Does the
advertising of "women's sanitary products" on TV bother you?
|
|
No, It is
a part of natural bodily function. Yes I am a man
|
|
| |
How early,
is too early to learn about sex? |
|
I dont believe
there is a too early, You need to teach your toddler that no one should
be playing with certain parts of their bodies, and if it happens they
should tell their parents. Even if it is uncle timmy or aunt rachell
or the kid next door. Explain to them that because they are your children,
there should be no secrets kept from them. You will understand and they
can always tell you.
|
|
| |
If you knew then what
you know now, what would you do differently?
|
|
Honestly, I would be more
sexually agressive. I look back at opportunities that I had in my teens
and smack myself up against the head and say. Oh thats what she wanted
me to do when she undressed and took a shower while I was in her bedroom
waiting for her to get done!!! No stuff this really happened to me in
college and she was FINE!!!

If you had
a teenage daughter and there was a book available which contained graphic
information about female sexuality, orgasm, masturbation techniques -
designed to teach them everything about their sexuality - while recommending
the delaying experimentation with penetrative sex until of emotional maturity
(and legal age) - would you let her read it? (please give reasons why)
|
|
Yes, It probaly
would kill me but yes. She should feel that she can talk to me about
her sexuality. I dont want her learning it from some amoral girlfriend
in the street. Many teens today feel that giving head is not sex or Anal
sex is ok because you will still be a virgin. That is a no no for my
daughter
|
|
| |
How did
you first hear about exotic sexual practices such as fetishism and group
sex? |
|
From looking
through old magazines found over a relatives house. He became my favorite
uncle that year!!
|
|
| |
Do you feel
that the increasingly mainstream reference to these things is a good thing?
(ie: Threesomes and guy's facination with Lesbianism being a standard
punch line on sitcoms these days). |
|
No, I hate
it. I dont watch a lot of TV and was home one Saturday at 1:00 in the
afternoon. An episode of Buffy the Vampire slayer came on. I figure,
I will watch it because I know it is a top TV show for many people. It
was an episode where Buffy was working in some fast food restaurant and
people were disappearing and the fear was they were being put in the
special hamburger meat. Halfway throught the show she is enteracting
with a character who is trying to get her to leave the job. They then
flashv to a scene with Buffy in the back ally up against a wall being "boned" by
this guy. It had to be 2 seconds but it definately made the impression.
I was flabergasted. It was 1 in the afternoon. I went to the internet
and protested and vowed to never watch the show again. Dont get me wrong,
I am an avid supporter of Free Speech. I am a huge Howard Stern fan.
I am also African American, and if I dont like what is being said on
his show. The N word or anything else. I have the right to turn the radio
knob, and believe me someitimes I do. However, this Buffy deal was a
subliminal shot that any child could have seen on TV. I am totally against
this.
