gynecologist review 18
how old are you, and for how long have you been seeing your gynecologist?: I am 27 years old. I visited my first gynecologist when I was 16 years old.
how did you find your first gynecologist? did your mother talk to you about it; did she take you to see hers?: I found my first gynecologist through my mother. The doctor was her doctor. She finally took me to see him after repeated yeast infections.
do you feel comfortable to ask questions about your body, what you are experiencing, to discuss your sex-life?:
I feel comfortable. Admittedly, the doctor's office is always a bit sterile and foreboding (so it is somewhat intimidating). However, whatever the trappings, I need answers and I will ask. Sex is a normal and natural activity - we ALL do it. The doctors and nurses do it too - so why should I care what they think?
how often do you see your gynecologist? what does a regular exam consist of?: I am going to make an appointment relatively soon. I am ashamed to say I have not seen a gynecologist for a few years. I was a virgin up until about two years ago. A regular exam usually consisted of a consultation in the beginning, a breast exam, and then an examination of the vulva and vagina.
would you recommend your gynecologist - why, or why not?:
My last gynecologist was also my mother's. He was a nice man, but a bit quick and abrupt.
what are all the factors that go into how you feel about your experience with your gyno?
does the reception and nursing staff play a role?
is there good reading material in the waiting room?:
I think it is really important for doctors to spend at least 10 minutes with the patient PRIOR to examining her. This enables her to feel comfortable discussing sex and other health issues while she has her clothes ON. The nurses play a huge role. They need to be non-judgmental and patient. Good reading material is vital. The office should be stacked with women's literature, health, and magazines for women. A few good auto or racing magazine for the husbands and boyfriends is fine.
is there something more you'd like to be getting from your gynecologist that you aren't?:
I am actually searching for one right now. I think what I would like to get from my new one is: no judgments, LOTS of questions, evaluation of the whole person.
have you been treated for a disease or disorder? what was it? was it easily diagnosed? what treatment was prescribed, and was it successful?:
No, no serious disorders. I was treated for a few yeast infections as well as a bacterial infection.

this conversation makes me think.... That I am pleased that woman are discussing these issues in an open forum. We should all feel comfortable to discuss, inform, and empower.
