gynecologist
review response 06 |
how old are
you, and for how long have you been seeing your gynecologist?
I'm
31, and I've been seeing my present gyno for two years.
how did you
find your first gynecologist? did your mother talk to you about it; did
she take you to see hers?
I finally
bit the bullet at around age 21 or 22, and went to one at the health
care center.
do you feel
comfortable to ask questions about your body, what you are experiencing,
to discuss your sex-life?
I do now.
When I was younger, absolutely not! It also depends on the attitude of
the gynecologist -- if she has a rushed, abrupt manner, then I feel much
like talking about such personal issues.
how often
do you see your gynecologist? what does a regular exam consist of?
I try to
go once a year -- I just went today, by the way! An exam consists of
breast palpatation, visual inspection of the vaginal area, and then the
dreaded speculum and pap smear. She also pushes a finger or two up inside
and presses down on my abdomen to check my ovaries.
would you
recommend your gynecologist - why, or why not?
I guess
so, although I think she seems a little rushed and even slightly embarrassed.
what are
all the factors that go into how you feel about your experience with
your gyno?
does the reception and nursing staff play a role?
is there good reading material in the waiting room?
I like
a comfortable atmosphere run by women, for women. The reception and staff
definitely play a role in making women comfortable. It sets the tone
for the whole experience. I was angry that the only magazines they had
out today were car racing and automotive mags!
is there something more
you'd like to be getting from your gynecologist that you aren't?
Maybe more
time and explanation of what she's doing.
have you been treated
for a disease or disorder? what was it? was it easily diagnosed? what
treatment was prescribed, and was it successful?
Never before, although
today she said she felt lumps in both breasts and is sending me to get
my first mammogram. I didn't think I'd have to worry about those until
my 40's!
this conversation makes
me think....
That it's better to
be safe than sorry, and better to cultivate a good relationship with
a gyno (including regular yearly exams) than not. Also, you shouldn't
be scared to speak up during that exam and to ask any questions you want
addressed.
