personal: eye of the beholder

do you like the way your vagina looks?
For the record, the vagina is actually the canal inside. What I think of as the face of the vagina—the lips, the clitoris, the clitoris' hood, etc. all the parts you can see—that is called the vulva. So, this questionnaire is about how you feel about how your vulva looks. [see vulva diagram] though I can't help but ask the question as: do you like the way your vagina looks? because that's what I've always called it...although, that's changing...—Alexandra

do you like the way your vagina looks? go into some detail about what you do or don't like about it.

I used to be insecure about the way my vulva looked because I thought my inner labia were too long and puffy. I would pull my outer labia together to hide that the inner lips slightly pertrude. I am alot more secure and accepting of the way it looks now.

have you seen many other women's vaginas? in photographs or live? where did you see them? did you compare yours to theirs? what did you think?

Yes, I've gotten very into looking at pictures of "NORMAL" women's vulva's on the internet, not air brushed porn stars, for the sole purpose of comparing myself to other women. I have discovered that the way I look down there is much more normal than I thought which is reassuring, but it also made me realize that comparing myself to other people will not change who I am or what I have. Ladies, remember.....while your sitting there wishing you have something that someone else has, there is always someone who wishes they have what you have.

how old are you? was this the first time you took a good look at your vagina? – if it is the first time, did you expect it to look the way it does? how often do you typically look at it? when was the first time you looked at it?

I am 29 years old and the first time I looked (and analyzed what was down there) was when I was in my early 20's. I was surprised because it looked different than I expected. I didn't realize at that time that women varied at all in that region because I had never seen anyone other than myself. I look all the time now and recently took pictures to see it from a different perspective. This made me more confident seeing how sexy I could look from a man's point of view.

have your lovers told you what they think about how your vagina looks? what did they tell you? did you ask them, or did they offer?

I recently told my boyfriend of 2 years that I was insecure about the way my vulva looked. I couldn't believe I actually said it because it's such a personal thing. He said he sensed I felt that way because I would cover myself up with my hand alot. He said that I am CRAZY for thinking that way, that he loves what I have because it's attached to me and he loves the way it looks. Since then, I've let go of my insecurities and decided to praise my woman parts. Covering up just shows your lover that your trying to hide something you THINK is wrong with yourself (pointing out your imperfections to others only magnifies them in their view.) He now says that just seeing me love my vulva and show it off to him is the biggest turn on I could give him.

this conversation makes me think...

Everyone is insecure about so many things, especially women, but your vulva isn't something that EVERYONE can see, so don't exert so much energy thinking about it. Concentrate more on how it feels when it is being touched, not what it looks like cuz that's far more important. Think of this as a reassuring thought for all women.....at least you don't have a penis!!!! Ha Ha : )
