For the record, the vagina is actually the canal inside. What I think of as the face of the vagina—the lips, the clitoris, the clitoris' hood, etc. all the parts you can see—that is called the vulva. So, this questionnaire is about how you feel about how your vulva looks. [see vulva diagram] though I can't help but ask the question as: do you like the way your vagina looks? because that's what I've always called it...although, that's changing...—Alexandra

do you like the way your vagina looks? go into some detail about what you do or don't like about it.

I don't think my labia are symmetrical, I sometimes wish they were smaller too. I have a little mole near my clit which I kind of like. Sometimes I like it, other times I hate it, sometimes I just don't care. I guess a woman can do nothing but forever compare oneself to an ideal!

have you seen many other women's vaginas? in photographs or live? where did you see them? did you compare yours to theirs? what did you think?

I've seen them in porn, and they made my vulva feel rather unworthy. However, I do realise that a lot of women in the industry have had surgical procedures to perfect their genitals so this comforted me a little. Also the clitoris website has several galleries which I believe better represent the average woman's vulva and it shows how different every woman's is. Looking back at porn, you realise that all those women's vulvas look identical, and that's kind of sad. I've also seen a live vulva, as I once happened to have sex with a lady. It was an interesting experience, there was no comparison, just a sense of feeling equal... it was all very spiritual!

how old are you? was this the first time you took a good look at your vagina? – if it is the first time, did you expect it to look the way it does? how often do you typically look at it? when was the first time you looked at it?

I'm 17. I look at it every day when I shower, when I dress, I guess I look at it a lot each day. I was always innocently aware of my vulva as a child, but when I was 13 I decided I should explore it and find out just exactly where everything is. I remember getting a mirror out and thinking, 'oh my god, I finally know where my vagina is!'

have your lovers told you what they think about how your vagina looks? what did they tell you? did you ask them, or did they offer?
|
|
I have never had any complaints, or any open discussion about my vulva, but I'm sure the way it looks is far from a problem to my boyfriend. I don't think it's necessary to ask to be honest, because the issue of its function overrides its appearance!

this conversation makes me think...

How one moment the appearance of your vulva can empower you, yet the next moment you're googling labiaplasty. Insecurity is a powerful thing.
