do you like the way your vagina looks?
For the record, the vagina is actually the canal inside. What I think of as the face of the vagina—the lips, the clitoris, the clitoris' hood, etc. all the parts you can see—that is called the vulva. So, this questionnaire is about how you feel about how your vulva looks. [see vulva diagram] though I can't help but ask the question as: do you like the way your vagina looks? because that's what I've always called it...although, that's changing...—Alexandra

do you like the way your vagina looks? go into some detail about what you do or don't like about it.

I think it's OK, but I wish it were smaller and less messy-looking. My clitoris is nice enough -- it's pink and small. My inner labia are symmetrical, but they stick out beyond my outer labia, and have a dark rim along the edge even though the rest of them is pink. I wish they were all pink, less wrinkly, and smaller. I wax, but I wish I didn't have to and the area were all smooth and hairless.

have you seen many other women's vaginas? in photographs or live? where did you see them? did you compare yours to theirs? what did you think?

I've only seen other women's vulvas in porn magazines and on internet sites designed to make women feel better about larger inner labia. I definitely look like the women on the sites for large-labiaed-ladies, and not like the ones in porn magazines. I thought it would be nice to have little labia minora because it looks very clean and innocent, and it would be more physically comfortable to have them tucked in. It also upset me that men buy magazines that feature women who don't look like me in yet another way.

how old are you? was this the first time you took a good look at your vagina? – if it is the first time, did you expect it to look the way it does? how often do you typically look at it? when was the first time you looked at it?

I'm 31. I first took a good look at my vulva when I was about 13 and the labia minora started to grow. I kept trying to tuck them in under my labia majora, until my best friend laughed at me and said, "they 're SUPPOSED to stick out, stop doing that." I didn't have the benefit of photographs then, but I did notice the change and wished that I hadn't changed. Now, I usually look at my vuvlva once every two weeks when I wax.

have your lovers told you what they think about how your vagina looks? what did they tell you? did you ask them, or did they offer?

My first lover adored my vulva and told me how beautiful and wonderful it was. One lover said he thought vulvas like mine were ugly, and then seemed to get disgusted with mine after we got intimate. A third lover, although not apparently turned off by it, told me that my inner labia were the biggest he'd seen, which surprised me, since I've read that 70% of women have inner labia that stick out., and mine only stick out a bit. A fourth lover told me I was perfect and beautiful and wonderful. I guess the benefit of having larger labia is that you can figure out who the weak-minded, media-influenced men are, and stay away from them. Unfortunately you have to get very intimate with a jerk if this is your way of learning he is a jerk.

this conversation makes me think...

I wish this weren't an issue. I wish I lived in a society where we had only one sexual partner, and stuck with that partner. That way, when I shared my body, the guy wouldn't be comparing what he saw with all of the others he's seen, including 1000s of airbrushed, tiny, pink and hairless vulvas that resemble the vulva I had before I hit puberty.
