Menstruation – the culmination of the menstrual cycle

That time of the month

how old were you when you first got your period, what was it like, and what did you know about what to expect?

I was 11. I had bad cramps and thought it was something I ate. I noticed a brownish colored stain in my underwear and knew I had my period.

how did you feel about it, and who did you tell about it?

I told my mom and she was too embarrassed to talk to me about it, so she made my aunt talk to me. I had friends who had it so I knew what was going on. Since my mom wouldn't talk to me about it, I felt ashamed and like I had done something wrong.

what menstrual product did you start with? how did you learn about it?

I started with panty lines and then moved to maxi pads. It wasn't until I got into college I started to use tampons. Since my mom never talked to me, I didn't know how to use them at first. When I got in high school I was too embarrassed to buy tampons.

are you still using the same method to deal with the blood; what methods have you tried; which do you prefer and why?

I bleed heavy so I'm always stressed out during that time of the month. I wear black pants and make sure I'm "padded up."

do you experience cramps, bloating, soar breasts, get pimples...? - if you do, tell us about it, and also, what remedies do you use?

About a week before "Aunt Flow" visits I get hungry and eat all of the time. Chocolate is great during that time. I used to get zits, but not so bad anymore. My boobs do get sore and it hurts to stand face first in the shower. I get really tired, yet I can't sleep.

do you feel emotional changes relating to where you are in your menstrual cycle?
I get really irritable. Everything pisses me off, even if it's in good faith. I get emotional. I would cry at the end of a Rocky movie when he's receiving his championship belt.

how do the men in your life relate to your period, or periods in general?

Any man I've dated has been understanding. I'm really open about my period and am happy to talk openly about it with men. I even dated a guy who would buy tampons for me. I'm sure my dad thinks I don't have a period.

this conversation makes me think....

  of grade school.
