It's been over nine years since I began work on vagina vérité®. Hard to believe that it’s been that long! This project has been and continues to be the most meaningful work I’ve ever engaged in.

While the tangible result of the work is the series of vulva portraits, the core and the purpose of the project is the so-many stimulating, fun, moving and question-provoking conversations that began when a friend asked me: do you like the way your vagina looks?

Thank you to everyone who has participated in creating vagina vérité®. It is because of your encouragement, support and participation that vagina vérité® exists. Alexandra

  making a v-portrait: - what's involved
To date, I’ve made 98 v-portraits : proud and unabashed vulva portraits, each beautiful and strikingly unique.

The women who have made v-portraits with me so far range in age from 19-60, are of diverse backgrounds, families, sexuality, experiences, life-styles, as well as comfort-level with their vaginas, vulvas and their bodies in general. What they have in common is the trust they placed in me—for that, I deeply thank each one!

When I look over the walls (the v-portraits are installed on my living room walls), I am moved. You really have to see it. I look forward to sharing this by exhibiting widely, and also by publishing a book of our v-portraits.

When will I publish?

It’s not a number of vulvas that will decide it, but a feeling of we’re all kinda sorta represented, and at the moment, that means more:

1 vulvas of women of darker skin tone
2 vulvas with more hair
3 vulvas of survivors of FGM
4 transgender vulvas

This is not say that there is any vulva not welcome, wanted and integral to the project. vagina vérité® is for and about all of us! We are truly unique—each and every one of us. My hope is that any woman who picks up the book will know that she is included, unique and valued. Because she is.

Everyone is invited to create a v-portrait. If you’re interested, click here to learn what’s involved in a photo session. They take place in Manhattan, midtown eastside and take an hour or so.If you'd like to make a v-portrait, please contact me, using this form and we'll schedule a time.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in one way or another, for bringing these conversations into my life and inspiring me to continue questioning and listening.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

spread the word
Let everyone in your world know about this project and how they can be a part of it. You don't have to reach out to someone who personally meets the four criteria list to the left there. Just reach out to your people. Yes, you have people. And, so do your people. You see where I'm going with this.

We are all way more connected than we realize. AND, I'm continually amazed by what I didn't know I didn't know about the people in my life. Their interests, activities, passions and connections. As well, what they didn't know about mine.

So, please spread the word. Whether this leads to what I'm looking for for the project or not, I think it will lead to more conversation and us learning more about each other. Always a good thing. [To spread the word: ]

Post or suggest places to post or people to email - I'll be researching online over the next weeks, looking for places to post my call for vv-participation. Where do you think I should post? I'm thinking women's orgs, art bulletin boards, health and quality of life orgs, social networking sites. Got any specific recommendations for me? Contact me, using this form to send me your ideas. They are all good. Really. Please don't assume that I would already know about this or that site or org. I may not have acted on it even if I do know.

publishing vagina vérité
In order to publish vagina vérité®, I'll be submitting a publishing proposal, which includes among other things, a description of the market for the book.

Your input as to whether you'd buy the book would be very helpful in preparing the publishing proposal for vagina vérité®. Take the v-book survey.

attend a vagina vérité salon
Informal gathering where you can engage in discussion and view the v-portraits. vv-Salons take place in NYC (the schedule varies). To be informed about upcoming vv-Salons, click here.

respond to a vv-questionnaire
Vagina first-times, taste and feel, virginity, vagina style, do you like the way your vagina looks?...

Participate by responding to one of the vv-questionnaires.
